Mighty River is a large-scale mixed media installation by Western North Carolina artist, designer, and calligrapher Carol Fountain Nix, created in response to the cultural aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated the region in September 2024. A native and resident of Western North Carolina, Nix's work is deeply informed by the landscapes, traditions, and resilient communities of Southern Appalachia. Throughout her career, she has explored the intersection of art, language, place, and cultural identity, creating works that invite reflection, preserve memory, and foster dialogue.

Constructed from storm debris recovered throughout the region and interwoven with calligraphy and written language, Mighty River examines the relationship between landscape, memory, loss, and resilience.

Rather than documenting the storm itself, Mighty River considers the role of the artist in times of collective trauma. Artists become witnesses, archivists, and interpreters, preserving stories that might otherwise disappear beneath the pace of recovery. Through the transformation of discarded objects into a unified visual narrative, the installation asks what is worth remembering and how communities carry their histories forward.

The work draws upon debris gathered from homes, businesses, and the River Arts District, where countless artists lost studios, tools, and decades of creative work. These fragments are presented not simply as evidence of destruction, but as cultural artifacts that embody the lives, labor, and identities of the communities from which they came.

At the heart of the installation are calligraphic panels featuring excerpts from Donna Smith White's poem Oh Mighty Pigeon. Once pristine, the panels were intentionally altered with mud, paint, and storm-worn materials, allowing the words to undergo the same transformation experienced by the landscape itself. The text remains legible, but forever changed—serving as both memorial and testament to endurance.

Originally exhibited as the centerpiece of the WORDS = POWER exhibition at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Mighty River extends beyond a response to a single natural disaster. It reflects Nix's belief that artists have both the privilege and the responsibility to respond to the defining moments of their time. The installation affirms that art remains a powerful vehicle for bearing witness, preserving cultural memory, and creating spaces for reflection, empathy, and healing.
